As fuel enters the carburettor bowl, the float rises and operates the inlet needle valve. Once the correct fuel level is reached, the float helps close the inlet valve, preventing the carburettor from overfilling.

Signs the Float Needs Replacing
- A faulty carburettor float can cause fuel overflowing from the carburettor, flooding, difficult starting, excessively rich running, unstable idle, fuel starvation or an incorrect float-bowl fuel level.
- Replace the float if it is cracked, distorted, damaged at the hinge, no longer moves freely or has absorbed fuel and lost its correct buoyancy.
Maintenance Advice
- When replacing 309-03125-0, inspect the 309-03147-1 float valve, 309-03148-1 valve seat and 309-03126-0 float pin at the same time. Wear or contamination at the valve and seat can cause carburettor flooding even when the float itself is serviceable.
