The Genuine Tohatsu 309-03147-1 Float Valve is an OEM carburettor fuel-control component used on selected Tohatsu 2.5HP and 3.5HP 2-stroke outboards. Also commonly described as a carburettor needle valve, this component works with the carburettor float to regulate fuel entering the float chamber. As the fuel level rises, the float pushes the valve toward its seat, shutting off the fuel supply when the correct level is reached.

How the Float Valve Works

  • Fuel enters the carburettor float chamber through the valve seat. As the fuel level increases, 309-03125-0 rises and moves 309-03147-1 toward its seat.
  • At the specified fuel level, the valve closes the inlet. As the engine consumes fuel, the float drops, the valve opens again and additional fuel enters the chamber.
  • This continuous action maintains the fuel level required for correct carburettor metering.

Signs the Float Valve Needs Replacing

  • Common symptoms include fuel leaking or overflowing from the carburettor, repeated engine flooding, difficult starting, excessively rich running, unstable idle, fuel continuing to enter the carburettor when the float is raised, or visible wear/damage to the needle tip.
  • Before replacing the valve, inspect the float itself and the valve seat because similar symptoms can result from a damaged float or contaminated seat.

Maintenance Advice

  • When servicing 309-03147-1, inspect the 309-03148-1 valve seat and 309-03125-0 float at the same time. Even a new needle valve may not seal correctly against a damaged, dirty or corroded seat.
  • Ensure the float moves freely and that no debris is present in the fuel inlet passage before reassembling the carburettor.
