Signs the Oil Seal Needs Replacing
- Replace the seal if the gear oil becomes milky or cloudy, water is found in the gearbox, gear oil leaks around the drive shaft/water-pump area, the sealing lip is hardened or cracked, or the drive shaft has been removed during a major lower-unit overhaul.
- When replacing it, inspect the drive-shaft sealing surface for corrosion, pitting or a wear groove that could damage the new seal.
