Key benefits
Key Benefits
- Separates water from petrol before it reaches the engine
- Removes rust, dirt and other fuel-system contaminants
- Available in 10-micron aftermarket replacements
- Suitable for marine petrol applications
- Suitable for external fuel/water separator installations
- Helps protect carburettors, fuel pumps and EFI components
Compatible Mercury Outboards
- 35-52456 is an external fuel/water separator, so fitment is primarily determined by the installed filter head rather than simply the outboard horsepower.
Suitable for many older Mercury petrol outboards, including installations across
- 2-Stroke Mercury
- 25 HP, 30 HP, 35 HP, 40 HP, 45 HP / Jet, 50 HP, 55 HP, 60 HP, 65 HP, 70 HP, 75 HP, 80 HP, 90 HP, 100 HP, 115 HP, 125 HP, 135 HP, 150 HP, 175 HP, 200 HP
- 225 HP, 250 HP
- It may also be used with compatible later Mercury FourStroke, EFI and Optimax installations where the boat is equipped with the matching remote 11/16"-16 filter head.
Mariner Outboards
- The same filter system is widely applicable to Mariner 2-stroke and 4-stroke petrol outboards using the Mercury/Mariner external fuel/water separator head.
- Typical applications include 25 HP through 250 HP+ installations, subject to the boat's filter system.
MerCruiser Applications
- 35-52456 also belongs to the MerCruiser fuel/water separator family. Sierra specifically cross-references it under both Mercury Marine and MerCruiser Stern Drive applications.
- Typical petrol installations include compatible
- 3.0L, 4.3L V6, 5.0L V8, 5.7L V8, 6.2L V8
- Other carburetted and EFI MerCruiser petrol engines fitted with the corresponding remote filter head
- For a specific MerCruiser engine, serial-number verification is recommended.

Suitable Applications
- Best suited to boats fitted with an external Mercury/Mariner/MerCruiser-style water-separating fuel filter system, including
- Mercury outboards
- Mariner outboards
- MerCruiser petrol sterndrives
- MerCruiser petrol inboards
- Carburetted engines
- EFI applications where specified
- 2-stroke petrol systems
- 4-stroke petrol systems
- The critical fitment check is the 11/16"-16 filter-head thread.
Signs the Filter Needs Replacing
- Replace during routine servicing or when there is
- Water contamination in the fuel
- Engine hesitation
- Restricted fuel flow
- Hard starting
- Loss of power at higher RPM
- Engine surging
- Rust or corrosion on the filter canister
- Known contaminated or stale fuel
- For EFI outboards in particular, a quality 10-micron separator provides useful protection against fine contamination.
