- For routine gearbox servicing, replacing the gasket whenever the oil plug is removed is good practice, particularly if the existing gasket is flattened, damaged or corroded.
Signs the Plug Needs Replacing
- Replace the plug if the screwdriver/head engagement is damaged, the M8 thread is stripped or distorted, the plug is heavily corroded, it cannot be tightened correctly, or gear oil is leaking despite fitting a new gasket.
- If the plug is removed and shows metallic debris, milky gear oil or water contamination, inspect the lower-unit seals and gearbox before returning the engine to service.
