Signs the Oil Seal Needs Replacing
- Replace the seal if it is hardened, cracked, torn, distorted or showing visible lip wear. Oil or fuel-mixture leakage around the crankshaft area, contamination, or evidence of an air leak can also indicate seal deterioration.
- During a powerhead or crankshaft rebuild, replacing an aged crankshaft seal is generally preferable to reinstalling a used seal.
