Signs the Oil Seal Needs Replacing
- Replace or inspect the seal if you notice milky or cloudy lower-unit oil, water in the gear case, gear oil leaking around the propeller shaft, fishing line wrapped behind the propeller, visible seal damage, hardened or cracked sealing lips, or repeated lower-unit pressure/vacuum test failure.
- Fishing line behind the propeller is particularly important because it can work into the seal lip and allow water into the gear case.
Maintenance Advice
- Whenever a propeller-shaft seal is replaced, inspect the shaft's sealing surface for corrosion, grooves or fishing-line damage. The lower unit should ideally be pressure and vacuum tested after installation to confirm the gear case is properly sealed.
- If water has already entered the lower unit, drain and inspect the gear oil and check the other lower-unit seals before returning the engine to service.
