The Genuine Tohatsu 309-64126-1 Shear Pin is an OEM propeller-drive protection pin used on selected Tohatsu 2HP, 2.5HP and 3.5HP portable outboards. The pin transfers drive from the propeller shaft to the propeller. If the propeller strikes a submerged object or becomes heavily jammed, the pin is designed to shear, helping protect more expensive components in the propeller and gearcase drive system.

How the Shear Pin Works

  • The 309-64126-1 passes through the propeller shaft and engages the propeller. Under normal operation it transmits engine torque to the propeller.
  • If the propeller hits a solid obstruction, excessive load can cause the relatively inexpensive shear pin to break before that shock load damages more expensive drivetrain components.
  • Because it is designed as a sacrificial component, do not substitute an ordinary hardened steel pin, drill bit or bolt.

Signs the Shear Pin Needs Replacing

  • Typical indications include the engine running normally but the propeller not turning, sudden loss of propulsion after hitting an obstruction, the propeller rotating freely without driving the boat, or a visibly bent or broken pin when the propeller is removed.
  • Whenever a pin shears, inspect the propeller for impact damage before installing the replacement.

Maintenance Advice

  • Keeping one or more spare 309-64126-1 shear pins onboard is recommended, particularly on portable outboards operated in shallow water.
  • Also check the propeller retaining hardware and split pin during replacement.
