Signs the Starter Ratchet Needs Replacing
- A worn or damaged ratchet can cause the starter rope to pull without turning the engine, intermittent starter engagement, slipping or clicking while pulling, poor disengagement after starting, excessive play, or visibly rounded/broken engagement surfaces.
Maintenance Advice
- During recoil starter servicing, inspect the mating engagement surfaces for wear and check that the ratchet moves freely. Also inspect the starter rope, reel, return mechanism and recoil spring. Replace distorted or damaged retaining components rather than reusing them during a major starter rebuild.
